KOALASSurgical Procedures Understandably, pet owners are concerned when their beloved pets have to have surgey.At Tanilba Bay Veterinary Hospital, we have the equipment and procedures to maximise the comfort and safety of our surgery patients.Every surgical patient has a pre-anaesthetic examinarion to screen for any problems, especially with their heart or lungs, which might cause problems with the anaesthetic or surgery.We recommend pre-anaesthetic blood tests to check for any hidden problems which may not show up on a physical examination.Administering intravenous fluids - "a drip" - during the surgery maintains the blood pressure and the circulation of blood to the vital internal organs.A combination of premedication drugs is given. These calm the patient, provide pain relief during and after the surgery, and reduce the amount of anaesthetic we need to use.An intravenous catheter is inserted in a vein in the patient's front leg. The anaesthetic is started with an injection through this catheter. It is also use to give intravenous fluids, and to administer other drugs which may be needed during the procedure.When the patient is anaesthetised, an endotracheal tube is placed in the windpipe. Oxygen and the drug which keeps the patient anaesthetised are administered through this tube. An inflatable cuff on the end of the tube ensures that there is an air-tight seal in the windpipe.During surgery, our patients are kept on a heating pad to keep their temperature at normal levels.The surgical nurse caring for the patient provides continual observation of the patient.Automated monitors are used to continually check the patient's temperature, breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure and the amount of oxygen in the blood stream.While operating, our vets wear face masks, hair nets and beard covers to prevent contamination of the surgery site. Sterile gloves gowns are worn to keep the surgery site and equipment sterile.We have a full range of surgical instruments. Instruments and swabs are placed in a surgical pack which is sterilised by steam and pressure in an autoclave.All internal sutures use suture material from individual, prepacked, sterile suture packs to ensure that there is no cross-contamination between patients.At the end of surgery, a pain-killing injection, which lasts for 24 hours in dogs and 48 hours in cats, is given intravenously, to provide rapid and sustained pain relief.Dogs are discharged from hospital with tablets to control any pain after surgery.As they start to wake up from the anaesthetic, surgical patients are placed on a heating pad to recover.When the surgery has been completed, we are happy to call pet owners to let them know how the surgery has gone on their precious pet.
