Equipment
At Tanilba Bay Veterinary Hospital we are committed to having a high standard of equipment to help us provide top quality care for our patients, in diagnosis, treatment and surgery.
Our CONSULTING ROOMS have all the equipment needed for the routine examination of all body systems.
# Littmann stethoscopes allow us to listen to normal and abnormal heart and lung sounds to assist in the diagnosis of diseases of these organs.
# We use otoscopes to examine our patients' ear canals and ear drums.
# Very specialised equipment is needed to examine eyes. Ophthalmoscopes are used to examine the internal structures of the eye, including the lens and retina. We are one of only a few practices in Australia to have a Tonovet to measure the pressure in the eye, to assist in the diagnosis of glaucoma and other eye diseases. Fluorescein stain is used to test for ulcers on the cornea, and Schirmer Tear Test Strips measure tear production in the eyes.
# Digital Thermometers are used to accurate measurements of body temperature.
We maintain a fully equiped LABORATORY to run tests to help us with diagnosis and also to assist in monitoring some medical cases.
# Two centrifuges spin samples of blood or urine at high speed to prepare them for testing.
# We have an Idexx Vettest machine to perform biochemistry tests which tell us about the function of our patients' internal organs.
# Our Idexx performs blood counts, analysing red and white cells in the blood and counting platelets. This is particularly useful for checking for anaemia, infection and inflammation, and for making sure our surgery patients have a good platelt count before their operation.
# We measure electrolytes (the salts in the bloodstream) with a VetLyte analyser.
# Our microscope is used to examine samples obtained from blood, urine, faeces, ears, eyes and skin.
Specialised IMAGING EQUIPMENT is used give us a view inside our patients.
# We have a very powerful X-Ray machine allows us to take high quality X-rays of even the largest dogs.
# Special X-ray films and screens let us produce X-rays with great detail of smaller animals, and of bones and joints.
# Our automatic X-ray film processor develops our X-ray films rapidly and consistently.
# We have an ultrasound machine which is particularly useful for assessing the size and structure of organs in the abdomen, such as the liver, spleen, kidneys and bladder. The ultrasound machine is also used for pregnancy diagnosis.
# A rigid endoscope and a flexible endoscope let us look into various body cavities.
Both our TREATMENT ROOM and SURGERY have gaseous anaesthetic machines to keep our patients safely anaesthetised when necessary.
# We use an iM3 Dental Base for cleaning and scaling teeth. This unit also has a high speed drill for cutting and drilling teeth when necessary, an air and water spray, and a suction facility whick can also be used during surgery.
# A cryosurgery unit is used to freeze tissues and an electrocautery unit is used to cauterise tissues and control bleeding.
# In our dedicated surgery we have a full range of surgical instruments for both soft tissue and orthopaedic (bone and joint) surgery.
# Two infusion pumps are used to administer intravenous fluids in animals which are sick or undergoing surgery. Their use make sure our patients get the right quantity of fluids at the correct rate.
# To monitor our anaesthetised patients we use an Apalert machine to measure the respiratory rate an a Pulse Oximeter to moniter the heart rate and to ensure they have a high level of oxygen in their blood stream.
