The PennHIP method of screening for hip dysplasia is the most accurate and reliable method of screening breeding dogs and bitches for Hip Dysplasia. The PennHIP method assesses looseness in the hips. It has been found that the degree of laxity in the hips is highly correlated to the risk of developing degenerative joint disease of the hips.
Other screening methods only detect the presence of arthritic changes at the time of
testing. These methods are poor at predicting
whether hip arthritis will develop later.
PennHIP is accurate from 4-6 months of age. Other methods only achieve their maximum reliability at 2 years of age.

When are PennHIP Xrays taken at Tanilba Bay Veterinary Hospital?
We perform the procedure routinely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other times may be organised by special arrangement.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, PennHIP radiographs can only be done by appointment.
How long does the procedure take?
Dogs need to be sedated for the PennHIP radiographs to be taken, and several perfectly positioned radiographs need to be taken. (See the PennHIP Website) This can take one hour or more. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment so the paperwork can be completed?
Where are the radiographs assessed?
The radiographs are independently assessed at the PennHIP Assessment Centre in Pennsylvania, USA.
Do the radiographs have to be sent for assessment?
Yes. Once the radiographs are taken, they must be sent for assessment.
What do I need to bring with me?
We need to submit your dog's details with the radiograhhs. Specifically, we need the pet name and/or registered name, microchip number (we can scan your dog to find the microchip number), date of birth and breed, as well as breed registration number for your dog as well as the sire and dam if possible. The easiest thing for purebred dogs is to bring a copy of their registration papers.
