We have worked to help preserve the koalas of Port Stephens for the last 26 years. We work closely with the Hunter Koala Preservation Society and the Native Animal Trust Fund, under strict guidelines of government departments.
Our roles include assessing koalas when first brought into care, examination and testing to diagnose disease incidence, ongoing monitoring of cases under the care of the caring groups, and final assessment and microchip identification of koalas before release back into the wild.
We have participated in programs to assess the impact of Chlamydial disease on koalas, and have collected samples to assess the incidence of retroviruses in local koalas.
We value the close working relationship we enjoy with our local koala carers, who are the frontline soldiers when if comes to hands-on koala care.
We regard each koala as being important to the local population, which has been gradually decimated by loss of habitat, dog attacks, diease and motor vehicle accidents.
